Obituary

William F. Megan Sr.,(Bill) peacefully passed away in the presence of his family, on 9 January 2026. Bill was born in Cleveland, Ohio on 27 November 1929. He was the adopted son of Charles Howard and Martha (Moss) Megan of Struthers, Ohio. He enlisted in the Navy in 1948, stationed in Bethesda, Maryland, he became an operating room specialist, an experience that laid the foundation for his future career. On 24 January 1953, he married the love of his life, Carol Munholand, who joined him for 65 years of marriage.

Bill graduated from the University of Toledo College of Pharmacy in 1957, then moved to Waukegan, Illinois for his employment at Abbott Laboratories. This ideal location on Lake Michigan allowed Bill to purchase a sailboat and explore the lake on weekends. Bill's love of boats and being on the water became his forever passion. With a career desire to manage his own pharmacy, he purchased the Lena Drug Store in December 1963. Bill manned the pharmacy seven days a week from December 1963 until March 1980. Relocating to Rockford, Illinois, Bill continued his retail pharmacy career until he was 78 years old.

After this move, Bill became interested in his biological heritage. He was able to connect and visit his birth mother, Helen Davin in Ohio and his four siblings. This family connection still remains. Later DNA identified his paternal family, and he was able to meet his two brothers, Louis Alexander Grimm, Jr. and Thomas Grimm.

In his spare time, Bill loved to build household necessities in his workshop and camp in his Scamp with the Fiberglass RV group. Bill enjoyed new travel adventures but not tasting new cuisine. When visiting Japan, mealtime meant being on the look out for a nearby McDonalds!

Bill was a lifelong Catholic and a devoted father to his seven children; Elaine, William Jr., Charles (Carol), Mary (deceased 2009), Thomas, Patricia (deceased 1970), and Virginia (David).

Bill and Carol experienced a variety of life events with their beloved grandchildren; Janell (William), Gina (Chad), Melissa (Eric) and Gregory (Heather) and step grandchildren Klara and Ted. But their great-grandchildren stole their hearts; Hudson, Grant (deceased 2014), Harrison, Haddie, Demi, Harper, Cecilia, Jacqueline, Christian, Daniel, Elizabeth and Joshua.

Bill will be greatly missed by his family and many acquaintances. Our family appreciates the wonderful care and kindness he received during his time at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, Illinois.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lena, Illinois on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at noon. With a visitation held from 11:00am until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the YMCA of Greater Providence (Rhode Island), www.ymcagreaterprovidence.org, designated for Camp Fuller (2026 Camp Fuller Annual Campaign), supporting youth scholarships and program needs inspired by Bill's love of sailing and the outdoors.
