Raymond "Ray" L. Handel, 83, of Lena, IL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. He was born on September 15,1942 in Freeport, IL to Theodore J. and Jeanette E. (Lubold) Handel. He married the love of his life, Eleanor Miller, at the Nora Community Church on August 26, 1961. He joined the United States Army and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War. During his time overseas, he formed close and lasting relationships with fellow soldiers. Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to his career at Micro Switch in Freeport, IL where he held various positions throughout his 39 years of service. After his retirement, Ray worked for the Village of Lena in their Street Department.

Ray loved all things trains, eagles, and hats. He was a long-time member of the Depot Stove Gang and looked forward to their annual train show and swap meet. He had an extensive collection of hats that represented his many hobbies and interests, as well as the colleges and universities his family members attended. Ray loved to share meals with his loved ones, often trying new dishes, but also never failing to return to his personal favorites of mashed potatoes, sweet corn, and of course, various flavors of pie. In the winter months, Ray was the first to volunteer to help snowplow driveways, and in the summer months, he opted for mowing lawns, one of his favorite pastimes. Ray also really enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends.

Ray was known by many as "Uncle Ray," and was deeply active in his nieces and nephews' lives. He would often attend their school events, and he and Eleanor would often take them for memorable camping trips to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park and Lake Le-Aqua-Na Campground. Ray was a man of faith, as well as a devoted member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena for many years. Ray's words of wisdom to younger generations were:

"Enjoy your life, look to God to help you, save your money, and get a good education."

Ray is survived by his sister- Shirley Dick of Lena, IL; special niece and nephews- Tony (Shannon) Dick, Kim (Nick) Krogull, Dan (Lauren) Dick, Delvin (Mae) Trost, and several other beloved nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews including Ari, O'Mar, Zoey, and Austin; as well as many other cherished family members and friends.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents, wife Eleanor, brother-in-law Mike Dick, and beloved in-laws and other family members.

A visitation will take place from 5:00-7:00 pm on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Leamon Funeral Home in Lena, IL

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, November 7, 2025, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena, IL

Officiating will be Pastor Jason Shaw.

Burial will take place at the Lena Burial Park.

A memorial has been established in his name.
