Obituary

Patricia Ann (Sauer) Wagner, born August 17, 1928, to James J. and Carolyn D. (Kuhls) Sauer in Hollandale, WI died Sunday, June 16, 2024 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Urbana, IL. following a brief battle with small cell carcinoma. Patricia (Pat) attended elementary school in Darlington, WI where some of her favorite pastimes included ice skating and skiing. She graduated from Warren High School in May 1946. In high school, Pat played the clarinet in the band and was a varsity cheerleader. She attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing where she was voted most popular student in 1948.

Pat married Norman E. Wagner on December 17, 1948, at St. Joseph's Church in Freeport, IL. They moved to Warren in 1951 where Norman entered the insurance business with his father and Pat worked for 26 years in the offices of V.D. McCool, DDS; Herbert E. Karolus, MD; and Kristapus Gudaitis, MD. She later worked for McKenna grains for several years. In service to the community, she served on the Warren Community House Governing Board and was a member of the Warren Women's Club, Warren Birthday Club, Modern Minerva's and bridge groups. Pat was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. She remained in Warren until 2015 when she moved to Windsor of Savoy independent living to be near and cared for by her daughter.

A high value for family was core to Pat's character. Family value was learned early in life when she lost her father at the age of 6 years old. Pat and her siblings Jon (4) and Maureen (9 months) were raised not only by their mother Carolyn, but by seven Sauer aunts and uncles and nine Kuhls aunts and uncles. Some of Pat's favorite memories were the summers she spent in Milwaukee with many cousins where they affectionately called her Patty Ann.

Her granddaughter, Krista, fondly remembers playing cards with Grandma Pat beginning at a young age, starting with Go Fish and graduating to Gin Rummy, which they played until just before Pat's passing. Krista also delighted in seeing her children play these same games with their Great-Grandma Pat over the years.  Her grandchildren, Kim and Brett, have warm memories of her sharing stories and educating us about our family tree along with numerous shopping trips, dinners, games of cards and rounds of golf with three generations.

Pat is survived by her son Ralph (Brenda) of Wheaton, IL. and daughter Cynthia (Michael) Melton of Mahomet, IL., as well as grandchildren Krista Wagner of St. Charles, IL, Kimberly (Quint) Summers of Mahomet, IL and Brett (Talia) Melton of Heath, TX. She is also survived by her six great grandchildren Caitlin and Nolan Flanagan, Sean Summers, and Zoe, Michael and Zara Melton. She is also survived by brother-in-law Ralph Munger and six nephews Doug, Richard, Robert Wagner, and Jon, Joe and Jeff Munger and two nieces Lisa (Wagner) Deaton and Jan (Munger) Andrews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Norman, her parents James and Carolyn, siblings Jon Sauer and Maureen Munger, two brothers-in-law Gene and Clyde Wagner, plus six stepbrothers (John, James, Edward, Robert, Roger and Jerry Appell) and five stepsisters (Dolores Wainwright, Jeannette Budenz Ilgen, Rita Smith Dewey, Phyllis Ferrell, and Meribeth Englebretson), and one niece Cheryl (Wagner) Reed.

Visitation will be held at Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home in Warren, IL on Monday, July 29th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, followed immediately by a Memorial Service also at the funeral home.
