Kenneth W. Amendt's Obituary
Lena-Kenneth W. Amendt, age 87 passed away on Sunday February 15, 2015 at FHN Memorial Hospital. He was born on October 1, 1927 on a farm in rural Lena to Walter and Rose (Mast) Amendt. He married Kay Reed on April 10, 1945 at St. John's Parsonage in Freeport and she preceded him in death in 1988. He farmed his entire life. Kenneth also drove a school bus for Lena School District, drove a gas truck for FS Stephenson Service Company. Kenneth took flying lessons and flew airplanes he co-owned. He retired in 1989 from farming and moved to Arco, Idaho. In Arco, he was a fireman and EMT, in the spring and fall he was a potato farmer. He enjoyed the outdoors and rode many years in the" Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa" (RAGBRAI) and walked down the Grand Canyon three times. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Freeport, a former Stephenson County board member and Kent Township supervisor.
He is survived by three daughters; Lee (James) Cox of Lena,IL, Tana (Bruce) Huffstutler of Matthews, MO and Karen (Jerry) Mock of Orangeville, IL. Five grandchildren; Amy (Charles) Altenbern of Gilbert, AZ, Bradley (Meghan) Cox of Lena, IL, Maria (Carlos) Delucca of Marietta, GA, Christina (Geoff) Maring of Carbondale, IL and Duane (Sara) Mock of Orangeville, IL. Four step grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and four step great-grandchildren; one brother; Dean (Irene) Amendt of Lena, IL. Three sisters- in- law; Joyce (LeOwen) Rackow and Nancy (Elmer) Hybarger both of Lena, IL and Dorie Amendt of Spooner, WI.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers; Reuben and Karl, one sister Lucille, sister- in- law; Ruby Amendt, brother- in- law Jack Hessenius and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon Thursday February 19, 2015 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lena.
Visitation will be from 10:00 till time of service at the church.
Officiating will be Rev. Rick Bader.
Interment will be in Lena Burial Park.
A luncheon will follow at the church.
A memorial has been established in his name.
