Obituary

Harold E. Meeker, age 92, formerly of Lena IL. passed away October 15, 2021, in Dubuque, Iowa. He was born on June 27, 1929, to Emery Fred Sr. and Elma Rose (Stanczyk) Meeker in Tulsa, OK. Harold married Helen "Beth" E. Litwiller in 1950. She preceded him in death in 1968. He then married Elizabeth "Betty" Anna Schubert. She preceded him in death in 2016. Harold was a lifelong member of the Lena United Methodist Church since his family moved to Lena IL in 1931.

Harold served in the US Army as a member of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean war, stationed in Virginia. He started Lena Building Service after his military service, which grew to become Lena Builders, Inc. (LBI) employing nearly 100 people in Eleroy IL. LBI was one of the first wall component manufacturers in the Midwest. LBI built at least 167 homes in Lena including creating Parkside and Fairway Hills subdivisions, over 200 in Freeport, and countless single and multi-family units in the greater Chicago area.

Woodcarving became Harold's hobby after retirement entering many pieces in and winning Blue Ribbons in national competitions. Two of his carvings are on display in the Lena Area Historical Museum. Harold was also an enthusiast of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and designs.

Harold was active in the Lena Lions Club for many years and served several years on Lena Village Board. Harold loved the village of Lena and proudly considered it his hometown for over 89 years.

Harold is survived by his daughter Lynn (Meeker) Seffrood of Colorado Springs, CO; sons Don Meeker of Encinitas, CA; David (Diane) Lawbaugh of Franklin, TN; Michael (Annette) Meeker of Epworth, IA; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren plus a new great-grandson coming in November, his furry buddy and grand-puppy Brooks, a sister-in-law Ardrith "Ardie" Meeker of Dubuque IA., nephews Rev. Paul Meeker of Bremerton, WA and Robert Meeker of Fitchburg WI.

In addition to being preceded in death by his parents and both of his wives, Harold was also preceded by son Jim R. Meeker, brother Emery Fred Meeker Jr., and nephew Dennis D. Meeker.

Private family services will be held and cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Lena United Methodist Church.
