Gerald A. Wire's Obituary
Gerald A. Wire, age 69, of Winslow, went to be with the Lord on February 10, 2014 at his home following a courageous fight against cancer.
Gerald was born on October 16, 1944 in Freeport, IL; He was the son of Glenn and Catherine (Hummel) Wire. He married Barbara Watson on August 16, 1969 at Good Shepherd Church in Lena, IL. Gerald graduated from Le-Win in 1962. He was active in FFA and 4-H. He earned his Illinois State Farmer Degree in 1963 and his greatest accomplishment, the American Farmer Degree in Kansas City in 1965. He served in the Army Reserves in Freeport, IL. Gerald graduated from U of I in the agriculture short course. He was a dairy farmer all his life farming on the Wire Homestead in Stephenson County. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening with his wife, and raising vegetables for the Lena Farmers Market. His greatest hobby was making things out of wood: replicas of horse drawn equipment, handy tools, raised garden beds, and individual projects for each of his children. Gerald was a charter member and past vice chairman of the Evangelical Free Church of Lena, and a member of the Stephenson County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by wife, Barbara of 44 years. Three children; Elbert "Bert" (Ammie) Wire of Chillicothe, MO, Brenda (Jeremy) Heimann of Warren, IL and Russell Wire of Winslow, IL, Six grandchildren; Samuel and Levi Wire of Chillicothe, MO, and Jason, Ashley, Nash, and Jordan Heimann of Warren, IL. Two sisters: Eleanor Stalder of Monroe, WI, and Shirley (Dale) Guthrie of Riverton, WY and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law Robert Stadler.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the Evangelical Free Church of Lena, IL. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until time of service.
Pastor Jim Erb officiating.
Burial will follow at Christian Hollow, Cemetery, Winslow, IL.
A luncheon will follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Le-Win FFA, American Cancer Society, Stephenson County Hospice, and the Evangelical Free Chruch.
