Carl R. Smith, 87 formerly of Lena passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Carl was born on March 7, 1929 in Darlington, WI. He was the son of Layton and Bernice (Clinger) Smith. Carl married Patricia A. Gassman on November 28, 1953. Carl was a graduate of Lanark High School in Lanark, IL. He worked as a foreman and group leader for Micro Switch MFG. for 30 years. He served his country in the United States Army. Carl was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ. He was an avid golfer and fisherman; he enjoyed playing horseshoes, for 20 years he lived at Lake Carroll which was his dream home.
Surviving are his sons: Brian (Margie) Smith of Orangeville, and Brent (Jo Sherman) Smith of Freeport, IL grandchildren: Aaron Smith of Pearl City, Natalie Smith of Orangeville, Kevin (Ashley) Smith of Woodstock, IL. Racheal Smith of Madison, WI, Stephanie (Adam) Haupt of Sidney, NE, Brendyn Smith of Traverse City, MI, and Brock Smith Freeport; great grandchildren: Dayton and Peyton; step-great grandson Kade Smith; two sisters-in-law Ardith Kitner and Paula (Joe) Gerke.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Patricia on October 3, 2014, one brother, Gerald Smith.
Services will be Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00pm at Salem United Church of Christ, Lena, IL.
Visitation will be from 1:00pm until time of service on Saturday at the church.
Rev. Randy Nicholas will officiate.
Burial will be in Salem Church Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his memory.
